Casket
Whether you are planning for yourself or choosing for a loved one, a casket selection is a very personal decision and an expression of your feelings. A casket reflects the personality and taste of your loved one and can be a final tribute to their life.
The casket serves many important functions as part of a traditional funeral service and disposition. The vessel will be the final resting receptacle for the remains of the decedent and can reflect the individual’s personal style. A casket may be used for either earth burial or cremation. The casket allows us to transport and present the deceased in a respectful and dignified manner for the visitation, funeral service, and final disposition. A casket affords a degree of protection for the earthly remains of the decedent during disposition.
The casket is constructed using many different materials. The primary option to choose from is metal or wood. The metal casket is available in basic steel of thicknesses including: 20 Gauge, 18 Gauge and 16 Gauge thicknesses; available semi-precious metals are: bronze, copper and stainless steel. A wood casket is constructed by using various wood species including ash, cherry, hickory, mahogany, maple, oak, pecan, pine, poplar and walnut. The wood casket involves much greater hand labor in their construction opposed to the metal units. Pricing options are reflective of this fact. Interiors for the casket are made of different materials including: crepe, satin, and velvet with numerous styling options and colors available.
When you visit a funeral home or showroom to shop for a casket, the “Federal Trade Commission Funeral Rule” requires the funeral director to show you a general price list (GPL) of available caskets the company sells, with pricing and descriptions, before showing you the receptacles. Traditionally, the casket has been sold only by funeral homes. Today it is becoming more common for the consumer to purchase a casket from a third party such as using a website or showroom to make a selection. In most cases, the sale is more cost effective from a third party. A benefit in purchasing a casket from websites is that you are able to search in the comfort of your own home by using your computer where pricing is considerably less.
Many families opt to have their loved ones cremated. One may rent a casket from the funeral home for the visitation and funeral service eliminating the cost of purchasing a casket . If you choose to select a direct cremation without a viewing the funeral director must provide an inexpensive unfinished alternative container such as a wooden, pressboard, canvas or cardboard receptacle.
