Caskets
Whether you are making arrangements for a loved one or yourself, selecting
caskets is a very personal decision. Caskets reflect the taste and personality
of the deceased and can be a final tribute to their life. Caskets serve
many important functions leading to final disposition. Most important,
the vessel will be the final resting receptacle for the decedent and
can reflect their individual style.
Caskets may be used for either burial or
cremation. Caskets allow
us to present your loved one in a respectful and dignified manner for
the visitation, funeral service, and final disposition. Caskets offer
a degree of protection for the earthly remains of the decedent during
final disposition.
Caskets are constructed from different materials; the two most common
materials being wood or metal. Metal caskets are available in basic
steel that vary in thicknesses including: 20 Gauge, 18 Gauge and 16
Gauge thicknesses, as well as in semi-precious metals including: bronze,
copper and stainless steel. Wooden caskets are constructed in many wood
species including: ash, cherry, hickory, mahogany, maple, oak, pecan,
pine, poplar and walnut. Wooden caskets require greater hand labor during
construction than metal caskets. Pricing reflects this fact. Interiors
of caskets are made from different materials such as: crepe, satin,
and velvet with copious styling options and colors.
When visiting a funeral home or showroom to shopping caskets, the "Federal
Trade Commission Funeral Rule" requires the funeral director to show
you a general Price List (GPL) of caskets the firm sells, with descriptions
and pricing, before showing you the receptacles. Traditionally, caskets
have been sold only by funeral homes. Today it is more common for the
consumer to purchase caskets from third parties such as from showrooms
or websites. In most cases, the purchase is more affordable from a third
party.
Many families decide to have their loved ones cremated. Caskets can
be rented from funeral homes for visitations and funeral services eliminating
the requirement of purchasing caskets. If you decide to have a direct
cremation without a viewing the funeral director must provide an inexpensive
unfinished alternate container such as a wood, pressboard, canvas or
cardboard receptacle.
